How to Choose the Best Hand Exercisers – Buying Guide

best hand exerciser
GoBig Hand Grip Strengthener

If you haven’t used a hand strengthener before, you may not know which one to select. We understand it can be a difficult process, as each one is so different.

We’ve decided, for this reason, to take it upon ourselves to create a buying guide. This guide will go through each aspect and what to look for you the best hand grips so you’re successful in your endeavors.

Type of Strengthener

As you could see from the products above, there are quite a few options out there. Not only do you have different intensity levels, you have a wide range of product types. Let’s cover the main ones, so you can start narrowing down your choices.

Coil Strengtheners

These are quite possibly the most common type, but also for many, the most uncomfortable/painful. These are made with a coil of metal. Each time you squeeze, it tightens the coil, then returning to its original position. While these are effective, they’re not ideal for those starting out with injuries or small strength levels. These are better if you already have a solid grip and want to take it to the next level.

Articulated Strengtheners

These allow each finger to squeeze individually. These are made around a series of springs, which separate the contact patches from one main platform. On our list, we have the D’Addario which is great for strengthening weaker fingers like the pinkies for guitar players.

Compression Balls

This type is often seen in offices to let off some stress. However, they’re also good if you’re looking to improve strength in your wrists and hands. The best ones will come with various resistance levels, as you can easily get used to them.

Spinning Balls

These aren’t as common, but still have their purpose. They work by spinning very quickly, and you must use your strength to hold it in your palm. These work more for just strengthening your hands and wrists, and not so much for your fingers.

Individual/All Fingers

You may be wondering if you should be training your fingers individually or all at once. This will depend on what you’re using it for. If you’re a weightlifter, for example, individual training isn’t going to be very necessary. You’ll just want to train overall grip, so look for a compression ball or a spinner ball.

In contrast, if you’re a rock-climber, a musician, or just want to strengthen individual fingers, obviously you’ll need to focus on strength and dexterity in each digit. If you are recuperating from an injury, individual strengtheners can also help as you can place more focus on each.

Adjustability

As you may have noticed, some of the strengtheners we featured are able to be adjusted. But do you need that?

Fixed-tension grip strengtheners are only set at one level. Perhaps this will work if you want to boost your grip, static trainers are very efficient. They have less moving parts which makes them more durable.

Adjustable grip strengtheners are great as you can use them with most hand sizes, and may be more comfortable for you.

Resistance Level

Much like with adjustability, some trainers just feature a static resistance level, while others can be increased or decreased. As we mentioned above with the coil strengtheners, they don’t work much if you can’t even squeeze them in the first place.

Ideally, you’ll have a model that lets you go from light-to-medium tension to high tension once you progress.

Portability

Where will you be using your grip strengthener? If you’re going to be taking it with you to the gym or the office, you’ll probably want something that is lightweight and compact. That way, you can simply slide it into a gym bag, purse, or even pocket without worrying about lugging a heavy device around.

Tips For Using Hand Exercisers

#1: Don’t do much too soon

As with any kind of resistance exercise, it’s important to not get ahead of yourself. Make sure to start out at a level that’s at a manageable strength for you. If you go too heavy, you can seriously injure the delicate tendons and muscles in your hands which can make things worse rather than better.

#2: If you’re worrying about plateauing, get a trainer with range-limiting clips

These will give you a visual cue that you’re easily handling a certain level and can indicate you’re ready to move onto the next level.

#3: Try to practice daily

If you don’t want to practice daily, at least try to train until exhaustion if you’re not injured or trying to rehab. This will let you gain strength at a quicker amount of time.

FAQs About Hand Strengtheners

Q: When will I begin to see results? You can realistically start to see results within a week with regular use. If you’re going to be rehabbing an injury, then take things a bit slower than you would if you just want to increase core grip strength.

Q: Is it normal to get blisters from my gripper? No. You shouldn’t be getting blisters or any type of discomfort from your best hand exerciser. They should be comfortable. They should provide a bit of tension, yes, but never pain or blisters.

Q: Will individual trainers boost my grip strength, too? Yes, they will. However, if you just want to boost your grip rather than dexterity or individual digit strength, you’re better off with a static exerciser like a ball.

Final Thoughts

So, which one of these best hand exercisers are the right ones for you? If you read through the buying guide, we’re sure that you can pick the perfect one. We want to thank you for tuning in and hope that our guide has helped make the process simpler for you. We’ll see you again soon!

Whether items sold on Amazon are deemed as eligible for HSA/FSA plans remains the responsibility of the buyer and their particular health plan provider.
